Can I Get Porcelain Veneers if I Crowns?

I have two crowns. They’re in good shape, but like the rest of my teeth, they’re showing their age. I’d like to get porcelain veneers to re-so the entire smile. Will I be able to put porcelain veneers on top of the crowns?

Mary,

You can get your smile makeover. You can even get porcelain veneers, but you won’t be able to put them over your dental crowns. However, that won’t affect your makeover. Instead of getting veneers on the crowns, you’ll just have the crowns replaced.

A competent cosmetic dentist will be able to match the crowns to the veneers. Make sure whomever does your porcelain veneers does great work. Look at their before and after pictures to make sure you love the results you get.

One way to also protect yourself from a poorly done case is to make sure the dentist places the veneers with a temporary paste first. Look at them in several types of light. If you love them, then allow the dentist to permanently bond them on. If you don’t find them absolutely gorgeous, don’t allow them to be bonded on. Once they’re bonded, they’re permanent and you’re stuck with them.
