Partial Dentures
If you’re missing some or all of your teeth, it may be hard to smile, chew or talk – and that can lead to feelings of embarrassment or low self-esteem. However, there’s so much more that can happen on the inside of your mouth, such as remaining teeth shifting position or drifting into the surrounding space and causing tissue damage.
Fill in the Gaps with Partial Dentures
There are several options that can help you fill in the gaps where you have missing teeth and one of those options is partial dentures. From removable partials to fixed implant partials, Dr. Macalik can give you a reason to start smiling again.
Removable Partial Dentures
This option consists of a metal framework with plastic teeth and gum areas. The framework includes metal clasps or precision attachments that hold the denture in place. A removable partial less expensive than a other options and several teeth can be replaced with one appliance.
Implant-Supported Partial Dentures
In the event that you are missing all the molars on at least one side of one of the arches – or possibly the molars on both sides — a conventional partial denture could attach to the front, but on the back there would be no teeth to hold it down. Not only does this make the partial more uncomfortable and a little more challenging to keep in place, it also puts a twisting force on the teeth it attaches to, which can eventually lead to a loss of those teeth as well.
To solve this problem, Dr. Macalik will put implants in the back of the jaw to give the partial the support it needs and it keeps the denture in place. In the photos to the right courtesy of Dr. David McFadden, on the underside view you can see four places where the partial is attached to implants. Another option would be to use two clasps on the teeth and then have implants only toward the back – an option that could save up to half the cost.
