What’s the Difference Between Lumineers and Porcelain Veneers?

Arlington cosmetic dentist

I’m researching in preparation for a total smile makoever. I’ve heard good things about both porcelain veneers and Lumineers. I can’t really figure out which is better, probably because I can’t seem to understand the differences between the two procedures. I do know Lumineers get advertised more.

Dear Karlyn,

It’s great that you’re trying to research the best options for your smile makeover, and I’m going to answer your question; but, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that you’re going about this the wrong way. You’re trying to research materials but what you should spend your time on is researching the dentists. Two dentists can use the same material with vastly different results. What your smile looks like depends on the skill and artistry of the dentist.

Now to answer your question. Then we’ll talk about how to find the right dentist. Lumineers are simply a brand of porcelain veneers. You’re correct, they are heavily advertised. They’re highly marketed to inexperienced cosmetic dentists as being easy to place because they don’t require any tooth preparation. While in some cases, that may work out alright, in most cases the smile ends up looking bulky and opaque.

So, how do you go about finding a dentist who can give you that stunning smile you’re looking for? I’d start by looking up cosmetic dentists in your area. Then check that they’ve done some significan’t training in cosmetics (more than you get in general dental school), for instance Dr. Macalik studied at the Pankey Institute.

You’ll also want to look at their smile gallery to be certain you like the type of results they acheive. Most expert cosmetic dentists have some form of a beautiful smile guarantee. After you find some who get beautiful results, I’d look at some of their reviews from actual patients. You just want to make sure they have a pleasant chairside manner so you won’t dread going. Aside from a pleasant personality, good communication skills are a must, so you can get the smile you have in mind.
